This piece grew from my love of layering, drips and letting the paint find its own way. I wanted to create the feeling of an imagined city sitting above the water, busy and beautiful but with something darker underneath.
The marks and textures begin to run and dissolve into the blue below, almost as though the grime and chaos of the city are being carried away by the water. I added touches of gold leaf amongst the darker areas to catch the light and bring a little beauty into the grit.
It isn’t a real place, but perhaps somewhere that feels familiar — a city caught somewhere between the beautiful and the imperfect.
